The S/S Karim, Egypt’s only steam-operated Nile cruise boat, will be offered for weekly charters and special events as of November 2010 for a limited number of embarkations.

This historic vessel was originally used by King Fuad I of Egypt and later by his son King Farouk. After the Egyptian revolution, the S/S Karim was used by the state and hosted President Gamal Abd El Nasser and later on President Anwar Al Sadat and his wife Gihan. Still powered by its original 1917 steam engine and stern quarter wheel paddles, the S/S Karim today combines the comfort of the modern era with the grandeur of the bygone past.

The boat has 15 guest cabins and can take up to 30 guests . She is decorated in a period style with many subtle reminders of her distinguished past. The restaurant serves a splendid selection of both – international and Egyptian cuisine with buffet and waiter service. With 32 covers, this elegant room provides an intimate setting for dinner parties on board. The lounge bar offers a full international bar service, a library with a collection of books dating back to 1849, as well as a dance floor and music system.
Outside, the lower sun terrace provides a shaded area with elegant tables and chairs as well as deck bar service. The upper deck has sun loungers, a Jacuzzi pool and is home for the ship’s steam funnel with original ship’s steam whistle. The reception area has colorful stained glass windows through to the restaurant .

The S/S Karim offers an unmatched opportunity to sail the Nile on a truly authentic historical vessel. The boat is available for charter on limited embarkations as of November 2010 . The start date in Luxor is Mondays for a return trip to Aswan .

New Archeological Discoveries in Fayoum 0

An Egyptian mission has discovered that the area to the north of Lake Qarun -within the Faiyum region – is rich in archaeological remains dating back as far as 40 million years. Dr. Hawass (SCA) said that the 10- kilometer-wide area is currently being explored to prevent valuable information from being lost. SCA archaeologists have found many artifacts dating back to the prehistoric period, including arrowheads and other finely crafted stone artifacts of Mousterian, Levallois and Aterian type. They have also uncovered pottery and stone beads dating to the same era, along with the remains of shelters used by prehistoric hunters. Archaeological remains from later periods are also present in the area. A cemetery that most probably dates back to the Greco-Roman period has yielded coins and other small artifacts.

The team has explored a tomb in a cemetery consisting of a deep shaft ending in two chambers, but further excavation is hampered by constantly shifting sands. In addition to the prehistoric andGreco-Roman remains found in the area, thearchaeologists have discovered pottery, pipes, coins and glassware dating to the Fatimid and Mamluk periods. Other finds include medical and cosmetic tools, as well as stone shot used in hunting animals during the Islamic era.

Dr. Hawass added that the excavation was initiated in response to a plan by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism to build hotels and resorts on the northern shore of Lake Qarun. The ongoing SCA excavations will ensure that valuable archaeological evidence is not lost to development, while reinforcing the need to protect all of Egypt’s ancient monuments.
